CMS Boosts Flexibility for Short-Term Medical Coverage

Great news! On August 7, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it will not enforce the 2024 STM duration limits while reviewing rules—opening the door for states to allow short-term medical plans lasting up to 12 months and renewable for up to 3 years.

This update means more choices for consumers who need temporary, budget-friendly coverage during life transitions—and more opportunities for agents to deliver high-value, flexible solutions.

Here’s what this means for you:
✔ Expanded coverage options for your clients
✔ Increased retention and lifetime value per policy
✔ Rising demand from clients seeking flexible coverage
